Tips for athletes

General information on all things you need to know when starting to think about applying for a sports scholarship to any post-secondary institution in Ontario. Below are some helpful tips on the application process and eligibility for various scholarships, awards, prizes and bursaries.

General Information
  • Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) Include…
    • Scholarships
    • Bursaries
    • Prizes
    • Leadership/merit awards
    • Housing/other non-academic financial benefits offered by a post-secondary institution
  • AFAs and scholarships are administered by the school you choose to attend
  • They are usually based on athletic talent, but other considerations, such as leadership skills or community involvement, may be considered
  • As of 2016, the maximum value of all AFAs awarded per student is $4,500 annually
  • Contact the head coach or athletic department of the school you plan to attend for more information
Eligibility
  • Entering Students: Students registering for the first time at any member school (for list of member schools, check the first link above to search the OUA website) in either the fall or winter semesters
    • Usually requires an average of at least 80%
  • Non-entering Students: Students registering for the first time at any member school in either the fall or winter semesters in academic years following their first (includes students transferring from another institution)
    • Usually requires an average of at least 70% on all registered post-secondary course-work
