Job Description

I help people and families buy, sell, and lease (rent) homes. It’s an exciting career option for anyone who considers themselves to be a good problem solver, thrives on helping others, and considers themselves to be self-motivated. Every person you are helping has unique needs and so, naturally, you will meet many different people in relevant industries including finance (mortgages), construction and trades (for home renovations, etc.), insurance professionals, and appraisors — to name a few.

Career Story

My first “real job” was a 12-month co-op opportunity with the City of Mississauga as a Business Development Specialist. I was a marketing major at Brock University while pursuing a degree in Business Administration. At the City, I provided marketing services for their Recreation and Parks department, helping their arenas/community centres as well as their recreation programs (ie. learn to skate, swimming lessions, etc) and facility rentals by coordinating offers and promotions, and executing market research projects.

Next, I spent the next 10-15 years in progressive marketing roles. Marketing can wear several hats and there are several types of specializations within the marketing profession. My specialization was campaign management, email marketing, and sponsorship marketing. Campaign management is an exciting subset of marketing that requires you to “do all things marketing” while executing your campaign. Often, you will find yourself doing social media, creating ads and promotional materials, conducting direct marketing exercises, and reporting in order to execute your campaign from start to finish. Sponsorship marketing is an exciting world in that you will have the opportunity to partner with many community organizations outside your organization. It’s a great option for a creative thinker or for people with passions in sports, arts, etc. — as often you will find yourself partnering with a pro/amateur sports organization, or an exciting event coming to town.

After about 15 years in marketing, I had a short chapter in government and community relations — it is a completely different world for those interested in politics, policy, and government affairs. Here, you have a great opportunity to make real change in your community.

This path has led me to where my current job as a Realtor. I have the opportunity to meet people, learn about exciting times in their lives, and help them with their needs pertaining to their homes.
