Julia Lovett-Squires
Reporter/Photographer Metroland MediaJob Description
I can sum up journalism in one word: storytelling. We are writers, observers and creatives. We watch, we listen, we ask questions but most importantly, we are seekers of truth. Words can be powerful tools that can help change the world. Whether a journalist works in print, TV, radio as a documentary or podcast producer, they need to know how to tell an interesting story that will make people pay attention.

Career Story
I’ll let you in on a secret. I wasn’t a great student in high school. I was disengaged and didn’t really focus on much except music. While I loved history, English, law, I went to school at a time when teachers taught by rote and seemed disengaged themselves. They taught the same way for years, it never varied and I was bored. So, with my musical blinders on singing in music groups and choir, I coasted through school and didn’t do particularly well – especially in science and math. It wasn’t until after high school that I grew as a student and finally discovered the potential I had all along. After an audition for a music school didn’t pan out due to my lack of theory, I decided to give journalism a shot and it stuck. Suddenly I was shooting documentaries, getting 80s and 90s and eventually ended up doing my post grad in videography. Even with that early success, it still took about six years to enter the industry but eventually I landed an internship on the east coast, then took a job out west before ending up in Flamborough. This is my eighth year as a reporter.
